ORANGE AND WHITE KOI
Basecoat the body with two coats of Light Buttermilk using the no. 16 bright brush. We will do the fins and tail after the body. Load the no. 8 round brush with True Ochre and dab this color onto the body in the same manner as the orange koi. Add a highlight along the top of the body with Snow (Titanium) White in the same manner (see Step 1). Shade both sides of the body with Burnt Sienna using the no. 16 bright brush; mop to soften. Use the no. 4 bright brush to float the mouth with Burnt Sienna (see Step 2).
When dry, transfer the lines for the orange areas. Basecoat the orange spots with Burnt Sienna using the no. 6 bright brush. Add a second coat over the spots with Georgia Clay (see Step 3). Shade the spots along the sides of the fish
with Russet, again using the no. 6 bright brush. Deepen the shading along the body of the fish with Russet. To highlight the top areas of the spots, use the no. 8 round brush and Cadmium Orange and pounce in this color along top areas of the spots. Repeat this step with Pumpkin for an extra highlight (see Step 4).
The fins and tail are done in the same manner as the orange koi, except use a wash of Burnt Sienna (see Steps 2, 3 and
4). Using the no. 6 bright brush, shade around the eyes with Burnt Sienna.
STEP 2
Fill in the eyes with Lamp (Ebony) Black using the no. 2 round brush (see Step 3). Highlight the top of the eyes with Snow (Titanium) White using the no. 4 bright brush. Add a Snow (Titanium) White dot for a sparkle. The reflected light is done in the same manner as the orange koi (see Step 4).
LILY PADS
Cool lily pads (marked with a C) are basecoated with two coats of Hauser Dark Green using the no. 16 bright brush. The warm lily pads (marked with a W) are basecoated with two coats of Plantation Pine. With the same brush, shade the lily pads under the flower and where one lily pad goes under another. Mop to soften (see Step 1). Highlight the cool lily pads by dry-brushing Arbor Green on the centers with the mezzaluna brush. (Hint: when dry-brushing, load the dry brush with paint. Wipe off most of the paint onto a paper towel. Scrub the color onto your surface leaving a trace
of color.)
STEP 3
STEP 1
On the warm leaves, repeat this using the dirty brush (wipe of most of the paint onto a paper towel and do not add water) with Antique Green (see Step 2). Again using the dirty brush, dry-brush a smaller area on all of the leaves with Olive Green (see Step 3). Thin Black Green with water to make an inky consistency and, using the liner brush, add the vein lines on the lily pads. Thin Burnt Sienna with water and, using the no.
4 round brush, and wash some color onto the leaves here and there. Add some reflected light on the left side of the lily pads with the no. 6 bright brush and Country Blue (see Step 4).
