    PAINTING TIPS Mixfleshcolorsasfollows:
n If you have my book, Mastering Oil Portraits, follow the foldout page in the back of the book – Appendix B. These mixtures will need to be in paint cubbies or small containers. Add a tiny drop of clove oil in the container. This will make enough for at least a couple of portraits since Santa has a lot of beard and small
amounts of flesh showing.
n If you do not have my book, measure the lines as noted
on paper and cover with glass.
n All portrait flesh colors can be lightened with Titanium
White. Hint: Mix colors and then add Titanium White to color mixture.
n Although printing distorts color slightly, the 10 sam- ples of flesh tones I use are shown on page 18. Not all are listed in the painting but are there for you to per- sonalize your own Santa. Light No. 2 and Light No. 3 will add pinker tones if you prefer. Dark No. 2 is also used to deepen tones when they are lighter than you prefer. Let your muse apply it!
n A good way to save your mixtures for another time is to place them on a transparency strip and cover with another strip (while wet), leaving enough area to see a new mix on your palette and adjust colors if needed. A full recipe for mixing a tube can be obtained from my book, Mastering Oil Painting.
