  Halftone No. 2, adding a touch of Alizarin Crimson to darken. Darken lines under eyebrows and cheek line. Add shadow just under edge of fur on the hat.
STEP TWO
FOREHEAD, WRINKLES, AND EYE SOCKETS
Paint forehead and eye socket with Light No. 1 and Halftone No. 2. Highlight with Light No. 1 and Neutral No. 3. Use the no. 3 filbert to shade. Use the spotter brush to line crease of the eye with Burnt Umber+Alizarin Crim- son (1:tch). The lid of the eye is shaded with Dark No. 1. Highlight with Light No. 1 and Neutral No. 3 as needed. Paint the lash line with Burnt Umber. Outline the iris and fill in pupil with Burnt Umber.
STEP THREE
EYES
Fill in whites of the eyes with Halftone No. 1 (green- ish tone) and shade corners lightly pulling Burnt Umber from eyelash line into corners to create the roundness. Add Cerulean Blue Hue to the iris of the eye and high- light with Neutral No. 5.
STEP FOUR
CHEEKS, NOSE, AND BAGS OF THE EYES
Blend lower lid with Dark No. 1+Halftone No. 2 and shade around the sides of the checks and end of the nose. Add Dark No. 1+Alizarin Crimson (1:tch) and Chromi- um Oxide Green to fill in nostrils. Round the cheeks and smile line by deepening the color as needed, adding a touch of Alizarin Crimson or Dark No. 2. Upper cheek is filled in with Light No. 1 with Cadmium Red Light as it rounds to beard.
Highlight is Neutral No. 3. Fill in ear with Dark No. 1+Alizarin Crimson (1:tch) for darks, Halftone No. 2 for base colors on ear. Highlight with Neutral No. 3.
STEP FIVE
MOUTH AND LIPS
Using a spotter brush and no. 2 flat brush, paint corners inside mouth with Burnt Umber. Paint inside of mouth with Burnt Umber+Cadmium Red Light for the tongue. Shade darks in corners and bottom edge of lip with Cad- mium Red Light, and add shine on lips with Neutral No. 3.
STEP SIX
FUR ON HAT
Fur on hat is Dark No. 1+Neutral No. 7 for left shad- ows and along lower and upper edges of fur on the hat. (Hint: If you get red into the fur, just add Halftone No. 1 or a touch of Chromium Oxide Green to Titanium White to neutralize the red.) The light fur is Neutral No. 3. High- lights of fur are Titanium White+Yellow Ochre (1:tch) to make a slightly warm white.
STEP SEVEN
HAIR, BEARD, AND MUSTACHE
Fill in base tone of beard and mustache lightly using Dark No. 1 and Neutral No. 5. Shadows are Dark No. 1+ Neutral No. 7. Add lights using mix of Titanium White+ Yellow Ochre (1:tch). Detail beard and hair with no. 2 flat brush and no. 4 liner brush. Thin the paint with blending medium or a mix of half thinner to half linseed oil.
STEP EIGHT
SANTA’S SHOULDERS, BACKGROUND, AND STARS
Add the shoulders of Santa with Grumbacher Red (Naphthol) and Ivory Black. Lighten coat as needed with pure Grumbacher Red (Naphthol). Fur is darkened with Neutral No. 5 and Neutral No. 7 and shaded darker with background brushed into the fur.
Paint the background sky using a fan brush in a down- ward motion with Indigo. While still wet add the stars us- ing Light No. 1. Dot the placement with Light No. 1 then mix Titanium White+Cadmium Orange (1:tch) to neutral- ize. Thin the mixture with medium and a light touch to add streaks with signature brush. Dots of stars are Light No. 1 topped with highlight of Neutral No. 3.
FINISHING
After all details are completed and painting is thor- oughly dry, spray with Grumbacher Oil and Picture Var- nish Gloss until there is an equal shine – usually two coats going each direction. When dry, spray with one coat of Grumbacher Oil and Picture Varnish Matte.
