 50 The Decorative Painter • ISSUE NO. 1, 2015

across much of North America and throughout Europe and Asia, and is a common garden animal in many sub- urban yards. The fur of the red fox is spectacular. Colors may vary among different populations, particularly those living in colder climates. Most common is this rich rufous, but other coat types include amber, platinum, silver, black- brown, and gray. Thanks to James E. Gary, who gave me permission to use his wonderful photo, and to Nancy Car- ney, who encouraged me to make this design a reality.

Recoat the center area with Mudstone, along with about 1⁄2 teaspoon of retarder, using the roller to distribute the retarder into the paint. (The retarder will keep the acrylics workable.) Drizzle a little Medium Foliage Green on the upper half of the surface, and roll here and there into the edges of the Mudstone to blend. Drizzle Dark Chocolate in a couple of areas on the unpainted surface at the bottom, and blend into edges of the lighter values here and there. Finally, highlight the still-wet
