ACRYLIC
SHADING
When the paint is dry, load Cobalt Turquoise Hue on the edge of the small specialty sponge. Keeping the paint facing the outer edge, set the sponge flat. Using a small rotating motion, float around the outer edge, keeping the corners heavier.
SPATTERING
Successful spattering depends on several factors; the paint must be thinned with water to an inky consisten- cy (about 1:1). A thick, full belly brush, such as the flora round, works well because it holds a large amount of paint. Longer bristles respond well to rapping against a sturdy ruler and result in tiny spatters. If the paint is too thin, the spatters will be large and soupy. If the paint is too thick,
the spatters will look powdery and barely visible. Always test spatter on your palette before spattering onto surface. When you’re ready to spatter, load the flora round with
thinned Titanium White. Rap brush sharply onto a ruler to spatter mostly around the edges. Repeat spattering with Cobalt Turquoise Hue. Let dry.
FINISHING
Remove painter’s tape from around the edge. Reap- ply painter’s tape to mask off the inside border. Using the oval wash, apply Patina Green Media Antiquing Cream to the outer border and allow to dry. Buff with a soft cloth to desired finish and remove painter’s tape. Spatter the outer frame with Titanium White and Cobalt Turquoise Hue. Seal with several coats of Gloss Spray Sealer/Finisher, let- ting dry between coats.

artist’s sketch
Even as a small child, Chris Haughey dabbled in crafts and painting. Her older sister was an oil painter, and Chris drooled over her supplies and talents. In college she majored in fine art (oil painting) and afterward sold paintings in restaurants and furniture stores. She later discovered the wonderful world of acrylic and has been an addict ever since!
Chris founded and is the owner of Cupboard Distributing (www.cdwood.com) and the Pixelated Palette e-zine (www.pixelatedpalette.net). Her background in art continually encourages her to try new and exciting paints, me- diums, and techniques. She loves what she does and feels blessed to be able to design and share her wonderful world of art. You may email Chris at chris@cdwood.com.
