 PREPARATION
Fill nail holes with wood putty. Sand the entire sur- face until it is smooth, and then use the tack cloth to remove sanding debris. With a sponge brush, stain the box and lid with Red Mahogany Minwax Wood Finish. Gently wipe off excess stain with an old cloth, and then allow it to dry completely.
Using a sponge roller and a large flat brush, basecoat the inside of the box with Soft Black+J.W. etc. First Step Wood Sealer. Allow to dry. Use the sponge roller and a large flat brush to apply a second basecoat of Soft Black only. Let dry completely.
Transfer the design onto the lid, including the outside and inside borders. Do not transfer the evergreens, straw, loose pine needles, hooks, facial details, tinsel, wreath on the reindeer, holly and berries on the snowman, or the loose strings at this time.
LET’S PAINT
For this project, basecoats are applied with round, ultra round, and liner brushes. Unless a brush size is specified, choose the size that best fits the area being painted. Unless otherwise noted, allow each step to dry before moving on.
LID BORDERS
SANTA
Basecoat Santa’s coat, pants, and hat with Heritage Brick and let dry. Add a second basecoat of Tomato Red. Shade Santa’s coat with Black Plum and then Soft Black. Do the same on both sides of the hat, under the tassel and above the fur, on both sides of the sleeves and above this fur, above the fur on the jacket, beneath the arms, on each side of the pant legs, and above this fur.
Highlight Santa’s coat, the center of the hat, the center of the sleeves, and the center of his pants with Fiery Red. Basecoat the boots and gloves with Lamp Black.
Transfer the design details for the face, evergreens, straw, loose pine needles, hooks, tinsel, wreath on the reindeer, holly and berries on the snowman, and the loose strings. Basecoat Santa’s face with Flesh Tone. Basecoat the fur, beard, moustache, hair, and tassel with Slate Grey. While still wet, scrumble Light Buttermilk on an appropri- ately sized angular brush over the Slate Grey.
Shade Santa’s face, along the nose and around the cheeks, with Light Cinnamon.
Use the no. 10/0 liner with Graphite to paint the eyes. Using the no. 10/0 liner with Light Buttermilk, stroke in the eyebrows with Light Buttermilk. Add a small highlight dot of Light Buttermilk in each eye.
Shade the cheeks with Tomato Red. Shade the beard, moustache, hair, and fur with Graphite, and then scumble these areas with Light Buttermilk. Shade again with Graph- ite. Add the mouth using the no. 10/0 liner with Soft Black. Line the lower lip with Tomato Red.
SPOOL
STEP 1: Basecoat the thick outer ring of the spool (where the string will be) with Light Buttermilk. Basecoat the thin inner ring at the spool’s center with Milk Chocolate.
Using painter’s tape, tape off the borders that surround and divide the four areas on the lid that will display the designs. When the tape has been placed in the appropriate areas, use the no. 10 stencil brush to dry-brush Heritage Brick and then Tomato Red to the four areas. When this is dry, add dry-brush highlights of Fiery Red through the centers of each section. Carefully remove the tape when the entire area is dry.
