STEP 2: Shade the center with Burnt Umber (acrylic). Using Soft Black, apply curved shades to the string area (these will serve as the beginning of the string) and ran- domly under the scissors.
STEP 3: Highlight the center with a brush-mix of Light Buttermilk+Milk Chocolate. Using the no. 10/0 liner with Light Buttermilk, create the string’s lines on top of the shading. Create the slanted decorative lines on the string with Tomato Red on the no. 10/0 liner.
SCISSORS
Basecoat the metal parts of the scissors with Neutral Grey and the handles with Light Avocado. Use Graphite to shade the circular part of the scissors, under the circle, and between the blades. Highlight the circle and outside of each blade with Light Buttermilk. Shade between the scissor handles with Midnite Green. Add highlights with a brush-mix of Light Buttermilk+Midnite Green here and there, referring to the picture of the finished piece on page 111 for placement. Use an angular to apply a wash of Bright Green over the handles.
REINDEER
STEP 1: Basecoat the body, head, neck, legs, and tail with Soft Black. Basecoat the antlers with Neutral Grey.
STEP 2: Apply DecoArt Americana Weathered Wood Crackle Medium to the reindeer using

STEP 3: Apply shades of Soft Black around the reindeer’s face, under the antlers and neck, above the neck, under the saddle, where the tail meets the body, under the body, and above the rocker (where the legs and rocker connect). Dry-brush the rein- deer again with Light Buttermilk. Add the eye with Soft Black. Add Light Buttermilk highlights to the left sides of the antlers.
Basecoat the saddle and rocker with Heritage Brick and let dry. Follow with a second basecoat of Tomato Red. Shade the saddle and rocker with Black Plum, and then with Soft Black. Highlight with Fiery Red.
Transfer the wreath pattern. Using the 1⁄4" crescent or an old scruffy brush, stipple the wreath with the following three colors in order: Antique Teal, Leaf Green, and Bright Green. Finish by applying DecoArt Americana Star Lite Varnish to the antlers and wreath.
