vARnISHInG: Apply several coats of Jo Sonja’s Matte Var- nish to the wood pieces. Avoid varnishing any areas that will require glue for the costume pieces—sides of head (wiggy hair), just under nose (moustache), under teeth (beard), wrists (cuffs), upper arms (fringe), and along top of boots (trim). Let dry.
COSTUME
HAIR, muSTACHE, AnD BEARD: Use the pattern as a guide to carefully cut a mustache from the fur. Set aside. Cut the following from the fur: two 11⁄2" x 4" (3.8 x 10.2cm) pieces for the larger hair curls, four 11⁄2" x 3" (3.8 x 7.5cm) pieces for the smaller hair curls, and one 1" x 3" (2.5 x 7.5cm) piece of fur for the beard. To prepare each hair curl, roll the short end of the fur with the fuzzy side of the fur on the inside of the curl. Lightly tack the middle of each curl while rolling with hot glue. Once rolled and glued, use scissors to cut the sides of each curl, leaving clean edges. Be careful not to cut off too much—only cut enough to clean up the edges. For the beard, fold the beard piece in half, end-to-end, and lightly hot glue together. Then hot glue the beard just under the teeth and gums painted on
FINISHING
CAnDIES: Hot glue the large pink button to the center front of the nutcracker base. Hot glue one of the round peppermint candies to the middle of the button. Hot glue the large pink half button on top of the wood skill stick belt. Hot glue the remaining peppermint candy to the middle of the belt. Hot glue a rhinestone to the center of each of the candies and to the candy stick on the hat. SPATTERInG: To keep the spattering from the face, cover face with a piece of paper. Use a spattering tool or stiff toothbrush with Warm White to spatter the nutcracker. CHunKY GLITTER: Generously apply Jo Sonja’s Matte Var- nish to the preferred area for glitter. Quickly sprinkle the glitter over the varnished area. Shake off excess.
