LET’S PAINT STAGE 1
In Stage 1, refer to Diagram 2 on this page. Add the following values using a no. 4 flat brush. Refer to the Color Key for color placement.
RED ORNAMENT
Naphthol Red where indicated.
Permanent Alizarin Crimson+Warm Black Mix in the remainder. Blend with the Naphthol Red.
BLUE ORNAMENT
Apply Ultramarine Blue+Warm Black Mix where indicated with a B.
Apply Ultramarine Blue+Opaque White where indicated as HL.
Apply Ultramarine Blue where indicated as UB. GREEN ORNAMENT
Apply Medium Green where indicated in Dia- gram 2 as G.
Apply Medium Green+Warm Black Mix where indicated in Diagram 2 as D.
Apply Medium Green+Opaque White where indicated as L.
Apply Warm Black Mix where indicated as WB. Blend with Medium Green.
GLASS
Paint the reflection from the Blue Ornament with Ultramarine Blue where indicated as UB in Diagram 2.
Paint the shine in the glass with Opaque White as indi- cated with a W on Diagram 2.
Apply Naphthol Red in the glass where indicated in Diagram 2 as NR.
Apply Medium Green in the glass where indicated in Diagram 2 as G.
Apply Medium Green+Opaque White in the glass where indicated as L.
Paint some reflective lights with Ultramarine Blue+ Opaque White where indicated as R in Diagram 3.
Follow Diagram 2 and start shading the glass.
D = Carbon Black+Opaque White (1:tch)
W = Opaque White
L = Yellow Oxide+Opaque White
UB = Tints of Ultramarine Blue (sometimes add Opaque White on top)
DG = Dirty Green: Opaque White+Ultramarine Blue+Yellow Oxide (1:tch:tch)
BG = Bright Green Reflections: Medium Green+Opaque White+Yellow Oxide

Highlight Mix: Medium Mix+Opaque White Light Mix: Dirty brush+Opaque White Medium Mix: Dark Mix+Light Mix
Dark Mix: Dark Brown Mix+Ultramarine Blue Very Dark Mix: Carbon Black
Cool Highlight Mix: Ultramarine Blue+Opaque White Paint dark sections with Dark Mix. Paint light sec- tions with Light Mix. Paint very dark sections with Carbon
Black. (First and Second Stage Diagrams)
Paint remainder with Dark Mix+Light Mix to make a
medium gray color.
Use a liner with Ultramarine Blue+Opaque White to
paint cool highlights.
Go over the cool highlights with a Turquois Mix (Me-
dium Green+Ultramarine Blue+Opaque White). Then highlight again with Opaque White+Turquoise Mix.
Add this Turquoise Mix to the blue ball where it says T in the Second Stage Diagram.
Shade the black with Carbon Black+Dark Brown Mix. Further highlight with Highlight Mix.
Float shading with Carbon Black. Float Opaque White highlights. Highlight with Opaque White.
