STAMENS
Mix Olive+Cream (1:1) to create a mid-light value green and add enough water to have the consistency of a thick ink. Use the liner brush to place the stamens around the center, pulling from the center outward into the petals. Think airy and uneven. After these have dried, use Pure White+water in the lighter areas to scatter tiny little dots to create the effect of pollen. In the darker areas use Cream+water to do the same.
BUDS
BASECOAT: Basecoat with Pure White+Red-Violet Mix+ Honfleur (3:1:tch). Dry.
DARK: Blue-Violet Mix, using chisel of brush.
HIGHLIGHT: Cream, using chisel of brush.
LEAVES
YELLOW/GREEN LEAVES
Basecoat in all of the yellow/green leaves (Refer to the line drawing on page 52.) with Versailles.
1ST DARK: Versailles+Carbon Black (3:1). Remember the smallest side of the vein will be the dark area.
LIGHT AREA: Cream+Versailles (2⁄3:1⁄3)
2ND DARK: Carbon Black+Red-Violet Mix (3:1) in the light- er areas closer to light source.
HIGHLIGHT: Variations of Pure White+Cream depending upon placement of each leaf in relationship to light source. ACCENTS: Mixture of equal amounts of English Yellow+ Emperior’s Silk on those closest to light source and Burgundy on those further away from light source. Place these accents on the edges of the leaves in mid-value areas.
BLUE/GREEN LEAVES
Basecoat in all of the blue/green leaves (refer to line drawing) with Amsterdam Green+Olive+Carbon Black (2⁄3:1⁄3:tch).
1ST DARK: Carbon Black. Smallest side of the vein will be the dark area.
LIGHT AREA: Basecoat Mix above+a tiny amount of Cream. Be careful as you don’t want this to be too light.
2ND DARK: Carbon Black+Red-Violet Mix (or Blue-Violet Mix) (3:1). Use Red-Violet Mix on those leaves closer to light source.
HIGHLIGHT: Light Area Mix+Cream. Not too light. ACCENTS: Accent with Burgundy to help those relate to the background color more easily.
