STEP 1: Using the no. 2 filbert brush, apply a light basecoat of DecoArt Americana Fabric Painting Medium to the entire butterfly on the front of the shirt. Best results for the following steps are achieved by adding color one wing at a time, working quickly so that the Fabric Painting Medium doesn’t dry before all wings are finished.
STEP 2: While the Fabric Painting Medium is wet, pick up Bright Yellow with the no. 2 filbert brush. Working from the body outward, stretch one application of paint as far out on the wing as possible.
STEP 3: Tip the dirty brush with Antique Gold, and then stroke it once on the palette to remove excess paint. Again working from the body outward, pull a stroke just less than half the length of the wing, reducing pressure as you pull the stroke. This will result in a gradual value change on the
wing. Repeat the entire process for each wing. When the butterfly on the front is dry, paint the butterfly on
the shirt’s back right shoulder using the
no. 8 filbert.

PAINTING TIP
Vellum paper or transparency film will work better than thin tracing paper, which tears easily when used on fabric. If transpar- ency film is chosen, be sure to de- termine whether the printer to be used is laser or ink-jet.
