ACRYLIC
Remove the arms and base from the body and seal each of the wood pieces with Jo Sonja’s All Purpose Sealer; let dry and sand lightly. Use gray graphite and transfer the main outlines of each element of the design.
Prepare a wet palette with the colors listed plus the following color mixes.
COLOR MIXES
Tingel’s Mix: Tingel’s Pond+Cornflower (2:1)
Light Tingel’s Mix: Tingel’s Pond Mix+Warm White (1:1)
Skin Shading Mix: Brown Earth+Red Earth (1:1)
Light Leaf Mix: Leaf+Warm White (1:1)
Light Turners Yellow Mix: Turners Yellow+Warm White (1:1)
Light Pink Mix : Rose Pink+Warm White (1:1)
This is a different mix compared to the “Light Pink Mix” for Pilgrim Pete.
TIPS AND TECHNIQUES
After painting the basecoat layer, make sure to lightly sand with fine sandpaper to remove any bumps or ridges. Touch up if needed before moving to the detail work. Re- fer to both the worksheet and the pattern for placement of important details. When the pattern calls for floating, make sure to use a mop brush to soften and blend the float. Between floats and adding detail, apply a thin layer of Jo Sonja’s Clear Glazing Medium and let dry. When using Jo Sonja’s paint, it is very important to set the paint with Jo Sonja’s Clear Glazing Medium between steps so more detail can be added without pull- ing up your previous work.
RED DRESS
Use Red Earth to basecoat the dress and the lever area, and basecoat all sides of the lever area inside the nutcracker. Stop at the curve on the lever. Let dry. Use a no. 6 and 10 domed round blender and Rose Pink to lightly drybrush highlights on the arms, end of lever, and bottom of dress. Then use white graphite paper to transfer the stripes and dots on the dress. Use the Light Pink Mix to line the stripes and add the dots. The stripes will possibly need two coats to make them nice and opaque.
BLUE JUMPER AND APRON
Basecoat the jumper and apron area with the Tingel’s Mix. Let dry. Use white graph- ite paper to transfer the main outlines of the apron, but excluding the lace cutout de- sign, which is done later. Use a no. 3⁄4" flat and Warm White to apply a thin wash pulling the strokes over the apron. Pull the strokes side-by-side in the vertical direction and then pull the strokes side-by-side in the horizontal direction. Once the main apron area is washed and has the appearance of thin white fabric, go back and touch up any of the basecoat on the jumper as needed and basecoat the band across the top of the apron with Warm White. Use a no. 10 domed round blender to drybrush highlights on the areas outside the apron area with the Light Tingel’s Mix. Apply a thin coat of Jo Sonja’s Clear Glazing Medium over the entire jumper and apron area and let dry. Use a no. 12 flat and Brown Earth to float shading on the jumper slightly down the sides, and above and below the apron. Once the floating is dry, very lightly transfer the lace design onto the apron with gray graphite paper. Basecoat the lace cutouts with the Tingel’s Mix. Then use a no. 1 short liner to line around the apron lace design with Warm White. Apply several coats to make the lines opaque. Lastly, use a no. 1 short liner to line the thick edging around the jumper with the Light Tingel’s Mix.
