PAINTING TIPS
DRY BRUSHING
For the highlights on the windows and doors, use a no. 2 flat brush. Load the brush and offload any excess paint onto a paper towel. Dry-brush highlights in the windows and on the doors by brushing straight down from the top to bottom.
LINEWORK
Use a liner that is appropriate for the design. The paint should be thinned with water to a little thicker than ink- like consistency so the paint flows from the brush. Dip- ping into a little extender and working into the paint on your brush will help the paint to flow better and allows more working time.
SIDELOADED OR FLOATED COLOR
This method is used for all shading, highlighting and tints. Use the appropriate size angle or flat brush for the el- ement being painted. Dampen the brush in water and blot
ed with Burnt Sienna.
Basecoat the windows with a wash of Yellow Oxide. The doors are basecoated with Red Mix.
Dry-brush highlights in the windows and on the door
with Warm White.
Outline the windows with a liner and thinned Red Mix. Paint the roof lines and the cross with no. 1 script liner
and thinned Burnt Umber. Add a gray line through the middle of the roof line with thinned Medium Grey. Out- line the door with thinned Carbon Black.
YELLOW HOUSE
Basecoat the yellow house and chimney with two coats of Yellow Mix.
Shade under the eaves and the left front edge of the house with a 1⁄4" angle brush sideloaded with Yellow Oxide. Add some horizontal lines on the house to give the appear- ance of siding by pulling the angle brush on its chisel edge.
Basecoat windows in Carbon Black and the roof and front door with Red Mix. Tap some Red Mix into the chim- ney area allowing some of the background to show through.
Dry-brush Warm White highlights on the roof, win- dows and left side of the front door. Paint the window panes with thinned Warm White. Line the bottom of the windows with thinned Red Mix.
Paint a shadow line under the roof and eave on the left side of the house with Burnt Umber. Line the bricks and the left side of the front door with thinned Burnt Umber.
on paper towel until the shine leaves the brush, then touch the long side of the angle brush into color and blend well on your palette. You’re looking for a soft blend of color fading out to no color on the opposite side of brush.
WET-ON-WET BLENDING
The sky and water are painted using a wet-on-wet blending method using very little paint. Drying time is extended with the use of extender and blending medium (extender) used in the brush and on the surface. When using Extender, do not use water as it acts as a solvent and will lift the paint. Begin by dampening the brush in water and squeeze excess water out of brush on a paper towel. Dress brush in Extender, blot on a paper towel and apply a thin coat to the surface. Be sure there are no puddles on the surface. If there are, wipe a little off with a paper towel. Using the brush with Extender in it, load with paint and apply to surface as directed in the instructions.
