This piece was inspired by the hard work of a team of people from the City of Lakeland, Fla., including Steve Platt and local veterinarian Dr. Patricia Mattson, who after seven years finally hatched three Black Australian Swans. Lakeland is recognized for our swans, swimming in many of our lakes, which started when Queen Elizabeth of England donated a pair to the city in the 1920s. We have White Mute swans, Black Australian swans and, in 2019, a new pair of the Black Necked swans. The black swans need assistance at times, but have since hatched several pairs on their own. The painting is Dr. Mattson handing two of the Black Swans off to Mr. Platt on Feb. 3, 2016, with big brother up front and little brother on the left peeking his head from behind. These swans are currently thriving on Lake Morton in Lakeland where I see them daily.

*How to use Scotch Magic Tape for corrections: Place a small piece over an area and pencil over a tiny area to lift color beneath it.
PREPARATION
Transfer the line drawing: Position and secure the line drawing onto your surface, place the graphite under it, then canary yellow paper on top and secure all in place. With the stylus go over the complete drawing to trace it onto your surface, careful not to place too much pressure at the lightest areas (around the outside of the heads, back of the bird and her fingers), erasing if too dark. Remove and make sure all of the lines are intact. If not, reposition the tracing paper and add the missing lines.
