The widely known and much loved cardinal is a mid-sized songbird with a body length of about 8.5". The distinctive
red crest and beak and the black mask on the face make identification of the adults easy. A largely seed-eating bird, the cardinal will also feed on fruit and insects. Common in many states from the central plains through the eastern United States, it is found as far west as southern Arizona. Its favored habitat includes gardens and woodlands, marshy wetlands and scrub. Often found on Christmas cards and used in Christmas decor, nonetheless the bird is frequently seen during the summers, with both parents sharing care of a brood of up to four babies, with the male taking an active part in feeding
the family.
BACKGROUND PREPARATION
Seal surface front and back with wood sealer. Let dry and sand thoroughly until smooth using 220 wet-and-dry sandpaper. Wipe off any sanding residue with a tack cloth.
Basecoat painting surface and frame with Ceramcoat Periwinkle Blue+Chambray Blue (1:1) using a sponge roller and synthetic brush for crevices if needed. Let dry. Sand well with 220 wet-and-dry sandpaper. Recoat surface with same mix. While frame is still wet, drizzle on a little Gamal Green in a few places and with same sponge roller, blending slightly into basecoat to soften. Don’t leave hard lines between colors. Let dry. Sand again. Spray with Krylon Matte Finish #1311.
Once painting is totally dry and cured, spray surface with Krylon Spray Varnish #7002 for the final finish.
Tips for Wet-on-Wet Acrylic Backgrounds: Remove lids of new bottles of acrylic and fill to bottom of neck with water.
