Today we will paint a 12" scoop wood plate in the Telemark style of Norwegian Rosemaling. It is painted in the traditional blue, red, green, yellow and white colors.
PREPARATION
Sand the plate, wipe off the dust. Use the 1" foam sponge brush and apply a coat of the DecoArt Satin Varnish to seal the wood. Let dry and lightly sand with the grain of the wood. Wipe off dust.
Basecoat both sides of the plate with DecoArt Deep Midnight Blue using your 1" foam sponge brush. It will take three or four coats of paint to give it a good opaque coverage. Lightly sand between coats and dust off.
Note: I like to apply three coats of varnish on the backside of the plate to protect the surface while rosemaling the design on the top of the plate. Spray a light mist of #1311 Krylon Matte Varnish on the top of the plate before transferring the design to the plate. This process creates an excellent surface for painting the oil design. Lightly trace the design on the surface with white transfer paper and a stylus. Don’t transfer all the vein lines and teardrops as you will paint them freehand.
