       PAINTING TIPS
I like to paint the background color on a piece of paper to try my color mixes side by side to see if any adjustments need to be made to the color mixes before I paint the design on the plate. Different background colors change the appearance of the colors so you have to adjust them before you begin painting the design on the plate.
I like to mix linseed oil into some of each of the LV colors and make a separate pile, which I will use to make linework and teardrops. I use a mix of Oxide Black + linseed oil to outline on the Dark Value (DV) side of scrolls and other forms.
Use a different brush for each color; that way you don’t have to clean the brush out to change color, making it faster painting. Be sure to use a small flat brush for the smaller areas and a larger flat for the larger areas. I use a bridge to keep my hand out of the wet paint.
LET’S PAINT
Refer to the color photo for the placement of colors. Remember to start with MV of each color, then paint the DV and last the LV. Now you can paint any linework, teardrops and dots with your stylus. Remember that each area has three (3) values of color (DV – MV – LV).
SCROLLS, FLOWERS & LEAVES
Start with the Middle Value (MV) and place it in the middle of each area, leaving room on either side, for the Dark Value (DV) and Light Value (LV). See the painted samples.
After painting the MV, take your flat brush and tip one corner into the DV, softly blend the two values together. Now you have to neutralize your brush back in the middle value before you pick up the LV on one side of your flat brush. You will paint this on the opposite side of your DV. See the painted sample.
