SKILLBUILDER
BUILDINGS AND ROCKS
STEP 1: With the no. 6 round, apply some loose washes of Brown Pink to the rooftops, doors, and windows of the steeple and building. Apply some heavy layers of Raw Um- ber to start shaping the pathway with the no. 8 round. Now take the no. 6 Keith’s Special Effects Brush and start adding some detail to the easels, umbrellas, and artists with Brown Pink. Paint a light wash of Cool Grey 2 on the rock areas with the 1" flat. As you apply the paint to the rocks, wipe it with your damp paper towel and rub the color into the paper. You do not want any hard edges where the rocks meet the ground.
STEP 2: Add some Pine Green to the ground area around the lighthouse and to the rooftops using the no. 6 round. Use the no. 4 Keith’s Special Effects Brush to put some Yel- low Ochre at the top horizon area. Next, add some Ruby Red to rooftops and umbrellas. Add a very watered-down wash of Ruby Red to the rocks with the no. 8 round. Re- member to pull the paint into the ground when applying anything to rocks (no hard lines).
STEP 4: Mix a loose wash of Sandstone and apply the paint with the no. 12 Keith’s Special Effects Brush to small areas at a time. Wrap a clean, damp paper towel around your index finger. Wipe these areas immediately after applying the paint. Make sure you blend the paint softly into the rock area.
STEP 3: Apply Indian Yellow to areas shown. The best way is to apply small areas with watered-down washes, and then rub it into the paper with a damp towel. Use a no. 6 or 8 round for this.
