13 THE POWER WORKBOOK FOR SETTING EMPLOYEE GOALS AND OKRs
ATTAINABLE
The third criterion of the SMART philosophy is that goals are realistic. SMART goals attempt to find the sweet spot between aiming too high and not aiming high enough. Goals that are set too high or too low can be viewed as meaningless because they’re either unobtainable or too easy. When considering if your goal is attainable, consider:
• How will we accomplish the goal?
• Are we being realistic?
• What will need to fall in place to accomplish the goal?
Sources vary on what “A” stands for. Achievable, Assignable, Action-Oriented, Agreed... these are just a few options. Different labels cause duplication. For example, Assignable (who’s responsible) overlaps with Specific (who’s responsible). We believe the model presented here has the least amount of overlap.
Make work awesome.
