Managing Smart
Managers have a key role to ensure Smart Working is the norm.
'Be the change'
Key to this is establishing a relationship of trust and empowerment between
manager and employee. It’s based on the idea that when people are given
a clear goal to achieve, in a supportive environment, they will be motivated
to do so without being monitored, supervised or forced. They will choose to
get things done in the way that suits them best and is most productive.
Management by results rather than presence – which is best practice in any
case – will increase productivity. Let go of micro- management and focus
on leadership.
Chose the most appropriate location to accomplish your work (rather than
your office base by default) ... and give your staff autonomy too! Limitations
on flexibility need to be based on clear operational need, not habit, nor
managers preference.
Start using Skype, Instant messaging and collaborative documents to
maintain contact with the team. Plan a regular get together for creativity
and interaction
