something that would never have happened if she hadn’t
mentioned what seemed to be an unrelated detail about her
past, but which turned out to be the key reality of her present
on which everything else turned. Addressing it, discussing it,
and uncovering how it dominated their financial lives provided
the opportunity to get past it and create a plan that works for
them. Success! And it had little to do with their money.

This is often the hardest part of discovery, but is also the most
important when performing any financial planning. There is so
much to think about that we simply don’t, because so much of
it brings up difficult feelings. Financial discovery ranges from
what you want your retirement to look like to how much
income you must support it to what’s your risk tolerance and
shelf life. But it’s more, much more. It’s what’s under all of
that. It’s what drives you at your core. These areas are critical
to know, yet we often spend a lot of time avoiding them,
especially core issues. So, let’s stop avoiding and start knowing.

Another example just came to mind. This is a situation where
I did not win the client, but I have learned she found someone
else who helped her. I believe the reason she ultimately didn’t
go with me was because what we dealt with was too painful,
yet dealing with it allowed her to finally have success with
another financial planner.
