Ready. Set. Retire!
with an income stream she could not outlive, and replenish the
principal in real time. The balance we discussed investing in a
low-risk managed portfolio of broadly diversified, non-
correlated ETFs, which had shown healthy performance over
the past decade or two. As she walked out she was clearly in a
better place, and was committed to moving forward. So, we
agreed to have the documents ready for her to sign at our next
meeting, and everything looked great.
Until she cancelled our meeting. I tried calling but all I got was
voicemail. I left several messages and never heard from her.
Finally, one day I called at an odd hour from my wife’s phone,
and she picked up. We were both surprised to be talking to
each other, so I kind of blurted out my disappointment she had
obviously changed her mind without discussing it with me.
She sheepishly told me she had gone back to her previous
advisor and decided to stay with him. I was rather surprised
and asked her about it. I said, “Remember we discussed how
he had you allocated completely inappropriately for your
circumstances? Why would you go back to someone who was
obviously so out of touch with your situation?”
“Oh, I talked to him about that,” she said.
“Really? What did he say?” I responded.
