Ready. Set. Retire!
trips together. But we got married and raised families of our
own.
So, Mom and Dad fell naturally into the role of doting
grandparents. Mom was always available to watch the kids at a
moment’s notice. But that wasn’t all. Not even close.
Mom and Dad had both been very high-power people with
influential jobs. For nearly 30 years, Mom was the executive
secretary to Robert Schuller of “Hour of Power” fame. As such
she rubbed elbows with many powerful and influential people,
including two presidents of the United States, movie stars, and
captains of industry! She got that job while my father was
working as Minister of Stewardship at the Crystal Cathedral. (It
was a family affair for a while. At one time, I worked as a staff
photographer for Hour of Power, and later, my sister became
Chief of Staff to Dr. Schuller.)
Later, Dad leveraged his high-profile position at the Crystal
Cathedral and his immense talent into a very successful and
lucrative consulting business helping build churches around
the country. He worked for several mega-churches, but he also
worked with small churches, as a way of giving back. The point
is, both had highly stimulating and very fulfilling and successful
careers. Retirement would have to be exciting to measure up!
