FIGHTING FOOD INSECURITY
OUTSIDE THE BOWL: MULTIPLYING MINISTRY
Founders Jae and Debra Evans quickly learned that food could be used as a tool for ministry. In 2005, they had moved
to South Africa to work with those living in marginalized communities. Children expressed to them that they were
hungry. Debra and some of the Xhosa moms got together and fixed a pot of soup. Their ministry quickly grew from 60
children to 300. The first Super Kitchen began operating in 2008 and produced 1.5 million meals in its first year.
Outside the Bowl funds the infrastructure that allows these food centers to produce large quantities of healthy meals.
Ministry partners purchase meals from OTB. This food draws people to their churches, community centers, and homes
and also supports orphanages, factories, and schools. As stomachs are filled, hearts are opened to knowing Jesus.
OUTSIDE THE BOWL’S TOOLS
SUPER KITCHEN
Super Kitchens are industrial, central kitchens that
mass produce hot, nutritious meals. At 2,000 meals a
day, a Super Kitchen becomes sustainable. These meals
are delivered to ministry partners in a 45-minute radius
surrounding the Super Kitchen. Because of economy
of scale, Super Kitchens offer an affordable solution to
these partner’s feeding needs.
VITA KIDZ PORRIDGE
Vita Kidz is a product developed by OTB South Africa
and is allowing children to receive a healthy, nutritious
breakfast. This maize-based powder when mixed with
water, turns into a porridge or shake. Results from a
nutritional analysis share that one serving of Vita Kidz
has 70 percent of a young child’s daily nutritional needs.
