Extended Medical Benefit and
Disability Insurance
Claire Lapsley Christine Wrightington
On the first of the month following 60 days of employment, the Agency will provide full-time employees
working 35+ hours per week Long-Term Disability income benefits at no cost through The Hartford. In the
event you become disabled from a non-work-related injury or sickness, disability income benefits are provided
as a source of income. Please contact the HR Department for additional information.
Northern Human Services covers Short Term Disability through Extended Medical Benefit (EMB). Regular full-
time and regular part-time employees hired to work 20 or more hours per week will accrue EMB at a rate of
.04615 per hour paid. EMB is for use due to the employee’s illness or injury only after drawing down 4
workdays (or 80% of the work week) of Vacation/Sick Time for each occurrence of EMB. If available, the
employee will be required to use Vacation/Sick Time to cover the four-work-day waiting period (or 80% of the
work week); otherwise, the four day wait is unpaid unless law otherwise requires payment for a salaried
employee. The maximum EMB accrual is 13 weeks. For each occurrence, a doctor’s note and/or completed
Certification of Health Care Provider Form will be required to verify a medical condition, prior to accessing
EMB.
• Employees must use EMB according to their regularly scheduled workweek hours.
