It is quite surprising how putting these few facts down on
paper stimulates the thought processes and other memories
keep popping up.
We shall see if they are worth the effort.
Mother came from the well to do Bayne family on my
Grandmother’s side, in fact they have their own family tree in
three volumes as I mentioned in the introduction.
At the time of my mother’s birth, her side of the family were
builders and roofers based in Harrogate. They owned substantial
premises in the town centre and operated a slate quarry for the
roofing materials.
As the years progressed this main branch of the family
became fewer and fewer and today there is nothing left to see
but memories.

JUNE 1947 LONDON
My memories of that first journey to London are somewhat
limited but the most outstanding was the huge hotel where I
was left to wander hither and thither unheeded. “The
Bonnington” was its name, with an immense domed roof over
the enormous main staircase and even larger dining room.
It all looked huge when one was only three years old!
Wandering alone was something I developed in later years and
perhaps it all began here.
My Mother, married my father Richard George Sanders on

the 16 of June 1947 at Knaresborough Register Office, this was
her second marriage. I suppose the fact that I was there on their
honeymoon is a strong clue to my “real” identity as the third
part of that young family.
