outcome was I did get a date for the next Friday and so our
courtship began.

I was learning to drive a car but had a Lambretta scooter for
my own use. It took a couple of dates to establish that Ruth did
not like scooters or motor bikes!
I transferred to the Cub Unit at the Sea Scouts and became
an Instructor. Ruth was granted a Warrant as Assistant Leader of
the Cubs and later I followed suit.
I had been taking driving lessons in fathers Ford Zephyr
Zodiac and loved driving. My motor cycle test had not been any
problem and once again, unlike school work I passed my car test
first time.
My using the car for courting whenever possible gained my
parents the use of a chauffeur for their party going experiences
and consequently Ruth and I often found ourselves invited.
Father belonged to the usual clubs and organisations in the town
and was very well liked in the community, especially by the
ladies!
