Page 5 - EBONY AN EXCEPTIONAL SHIRE HORSE
P. 5

Not many weeks after Jupiter was born, Tom Hardy, that horse dealer from
Lincoln telephoned to say he had a friend with a horse that we should buy.
This was the horse that was destined to change our entire lives!

Enter “Ebony”. Following Tom Hardy's call we travelled to Wharton just
outside Gainsborough in Northern Lincolnshire and found this horse. He was
just two years old and seemed enormous, certainly the biggest horse we had
            even come across.
It did not take us long to decide to buy him, in fact I must mention the facts
that Ruth has reminded me about.
In the farmyard where we met Ebony, the farmer had a clutch of kittens in a
hay rack. He offered daughter Helen her choice from the litter, and Wharton
the white kitten returned with us to Ivy House.
There are two ways of looking at the purchase of Ebony:
He was free and the kitten cost £600 or alternatively the kitten cost £600 and
we had a free Shire Horse.

That kitten also turned out to be a memorable character.
