alongside some full size horses.
This was obviously from the
drivers with little or no knowledge
of Shetlands and they soon
changed their tune.
Jill was 48 inches high, quite big
for a Shetland and full of energy.
She had been used in BDS
events by Diana and knew full
well what was expected of her.
Added to this, the normal
excitement of the ‘meet’ with
other horses and she was
frequently ‘pushing‘ the larger
horses and their frequently ‘large’
passengers up many of the hills
and dales.
The story involving the snow drift happened at the end of that year when we had managed
to attend every rally in the summer season not only with our own ‘turnout’ of Juno or
Jupiter but Jill and Helen attended every rally too.
The Lincolnshire County group had a special cup to be presented annually at the General
Meeting and Christmas get together to the family who attended to most rallies. This was to
be my downfall!
It was lovely for us that because we had attended with two turnouts, we had undoubtedly
won the cup for the year but Mrs Goffin felt it her responsibility to ensure I had a
memorable evening too. She loved her glass of whisky and not a small glass either and I
was invited to join her at the bar to celebrate.
Even now I can not remember what I was drinking as at two previous times in my life that
involved ‘celebrations’, I had over indulged in firstly vodka and latterly Bacardi rum and
could not face either of these beverages again. Whisky I did not like at all, but whatever it
