View of the Market place from the Stump Balcony.
Likewise, visitors having climbed the tower to its second
balcony have uninterrupted views of the whole of the South
Eastern County. Lincoln Cathedral lies to the north, Spalding
in the south and the coast of Norfolk across the broad expanse
of “the Wash” to the East.
In the square, further to the south, and on the very banks of
the river adjacent to the Town Bridge are the “Assembly
Rooms”. A Council owned Georgian styled building that was
venue for all major functions in the town. Traditional festivals
such as the annual “beastmart”, the May fair, proclamations of
the new Mayor, announcements of various elections, the
arrival of Santa Claus and other events of importance were
proclaimed from the balcony facing out over the whole of the
Market Square where vast crowds would gather for each event.
In the south of the square was the Peacock and Royal Hotel.
The largest in the town with wide sweeping steps up to classic
porticoed frontage.
