The Morris and Austin mini saloon had just arrived in
1959, quickly followed by their van and pick up versions.
Family cars with side valve engines were being rapidly
replaced with the far superior overhead valve motors
previously only seen in more specialist makes.
The Rover was still a large and very heavy stately saloon.
Twin overhead camshafts were appearing now in such cars
as the Jaguar Mk 2 and modern, ugly SUV’s were unimaginable.
In commercial vehicles, Bedford was the most prolific.
Their OB coach and long bonneted lorry of the same era were
mainstays in town and countryside. Both with petrol engines.
Their very successful TK diesel truck was just beginning its
conquest of the commercial vehicle industry.
Vauxhall had a
Cresta and Victor with
futuristic styling.
Austin and Morris, who
still had successful
independent dealers,
had introduced
“pininfarina” styling
with sharp wings and
curves.
We were yet to see a
Ford Cortina but we saw the new Mk 2 Zephyr and Consul,
both with sharp “fins”.
