The week before this particularly memorable day, our team
had been playing Wyberton, not one of the top teams in the
league, but nevertheless we lost 14 to 0 plus a pair of
            wellingtons.

Picture of the team who lost the wellingtons!

The wellingtons were not part of the team it is just that a
pair were lost and never recovered from the venue!
It was now December and Christmas festivities well under
way. We met our boys by arrangement on a riverside quay in
the town’s South Street, opposite the old Custom House.
Much of ‘old’ Boston is difficult for younger readers to
comprehend as in the late 1960’s the local Council decided to
destroy the centre of the town and its classic architectural
heritage by driving an “internal by -pass” road through its very
            heart.

(BY PASS by way of my comment)
Who in their wisdom has ever heard of an “internal by-
            pass”?
