“THE MG GOES “TWINNING” TO FRANCE”
VISITORS TO SPILSBY
I know as I write, that this must all have happened around and about 1988.
It was on one Saturday morning that we received a telephone request to rush up to the
local town and help to cope with some visitors from France.
M. Vielle, his deputy Mayor Mme. Denieu, an adjoint Serge Letort and his wife had arrived
to ‘look the town over’.
They lived in La Sarthe, one of the northern regions of France just below Normandy.
Evidently La Sarthe had been, unbeknown to us, officially allocated the County of
Lincolnshire to be their ‘twin’ in the good old UK!
We never ever did find out how the Fresnay sur Sarthe contingent chose the sleepy and to
our mind utterly lethargic town of Spilsby as on visiting their lovely country town in rural
France we could find everything to commend it, history, architecture, beauty, good
organisation and lovely welcoming ‘natives’! Spilsby has none of these things!
