CHAPTER FIFTEEN
“ROBERT AND THE WEDDINGS”
THE ALLISON WEDDING
We actually provided wedding transport for a large number of weddings in Boston. What
was different about this one was firstly that my partner for the day, was our good
neighbour at Great Steeping, Robert and the second was that the wedding was for the
family of a distinguished surgeon from the old Boston Group of Hospitals, Mr Sidney
Allison.
Sidney was in his prime when Boston had four hospitals spread around the town. He
was based at the General Hospital not far from the towns famous dock.
Due to the wisdom of some in the 1970's, all these excellent smaller hospitals were
bulldozed and replaced by one large “District General Hospital”. Not a great success many
would say and fraught with problems its entire life.
Sidney was now well retired from his everyday job but still running his original fleet of
motor cars namely , a lovely 1950's Bentley sports limousine, a 1950's Rover 90 and the
pride was a stately vintage Rolls Royce, just like the one driven by Sir Lancelot Spratt in
the “Doctor in the House” film.
These cars were to be seen parked perhaps haphazardly around the entrance to his
home just off the A16 road, north out of the town.
We were booked to provide wedding transport for his daughter from home to the local
church of Holy Trinity which was situated on the main A16 road going north out of the
town.
All this is quite significant as you will see when the story unfolds.
