11 Driving a Company Vehicle
1. Vehicle Induction and Risk Assessment - You must not operate any Company vehicle
unless you are fully trained to do so and are fully conversant with the vehicle’s controls.
If you are unsure of any of the vehicle’s operations, you must speak to your immediate
manager, who will ensure you are fully trained before you start working with the vehicle.
You must also be fully conversant and signed for the risk assessment relevant to the
vehicle that you are operating, this will include agency or temporary staff.
2. Drivers Licence - All Employees and temporary staff driving vehicles for FTL Ltd are
responsible for maintaining a valid driving licence for the class of vehicle they operate.
The Company will expect to see your licence before you start driving for the company.
You will also be required to give FTL Ltd permission to let an authorised third party to
continually check your license status. After completing the sign off sheet your details
can be accessed for 3 years or until you leave the company. Drivers must abide by all
Road Traffic legislation and abide with all vehicle and road speed limitations. Drivers
are expected to show care and consideration to the general public and other road
users and abide by the Highway Code. Drivers must not, by their actions, expose
other company employees, members of the public or customers to danger.
3. Vehicle keys-
• Keys are retained by regular drivers unless they are on holiday when the keys
should be returned to the office key safe.
• Spare keys are available from the Fleet Manager if required.
• Agency or temporary workers will be required to return their keys at the end of
every shift
4. Guarding - Vehicles and Plant are fitted with safety guards and rails as per the
manufacturer’s specifications. These guards must not be removed or tampered with at
any time. If you find that any safety equipment is damaged or missing, you must report
it immediately to your manager and do not operate the vehicle or plant until it has been
repaired.
5. First Aid Boxes - First Aid boxes are provided at the Company’s head office and in
LGV cabs. When you have used any item from a first aid kit, this must be treated as an
accident and recorded in the accident book. You must then notify your manager who will
arrange to replenish any items used.
6. Accidents - All accidents must be reported to your manager and an entry must be made
into the Company accident book. It is a legal requirement that all accidents and / or near
misses must be reported and documented in full. Photographic evidence must also be
collected of accidents and incidents involving company property.
7. Cameras - Photographs taken on digital cameras or telephones are also welcomed and
can be downloaded or e-mailed to your manager to help further with the investigation.
The on-board camera system fitted to some of the fleet may also be downloaded as
evidence in an accident and used by the Police or our insurers.
