1.4 Risk Assessments and Safe Systems of Work
A copy of all risk assessments and safe systems of work will be available at the transport office.
As part of your induction, you will be asked to read and demonstrate your understanding of the
risks and control measures identified. At any point, please feel free to ask questions and take the
time you need to gain a thorough understanding of the risks that you may face whilst carrying
out your daily activities. The safe systems of work for the various main machine types and
activities can also be found in this manual so please read it as this has been written for your
safety whilst working at FTL.
1.5 Induction Process
At FTL Ltd we take your safety very seriously and you will undergo a thorough induction that will
include classroom time where you will be shown company documents policies and procedures
relevant to the role you are about to undertake with the company. Please feel free to ask any
questions at any time to clarify anything that you are unsure of. You may be asked to shadow an
experienced FTL Ltd driver and observe, again this is your opportunity to ask questions and learn
from our experienced staff. You may then be asked to drive with an assessor who will monitor
you’re driving and feed back to the Directors and Transport Manager as to what your next steps
will be. This could be that you are competent to continue on your own, or it could be that you
need some further training in a certain area.
Please work with us during this time as we want to ensure that you are safe to work on your own
and are fully confident with the vehicle that you will be driving and operating.
Please ask questions so that we can help you.
1.6 Drugs and Alcohol Policy
Alcohol
To avoid unsafe practices in the workplace, FTL Ltd as you would expect have a strict policy
on the consumption of alcohol during working hours and on the level of alcohol in the system
of employees whilst working. The policy covers both being cautious about drinking prior to
attending work and drinking during breaks on and off the premises.
Employees are required to take reasonable care of themselves and others who could be
affected by what they do.
There will be no consumption of alcohol on or off the premises of the
company or its customers within working hours. If you are considering
having a drink on the ferry then you must ensure that the level of
alcohol in your system is below the level required to drive in the
country that you will be disembarking at.
Alcohol Levels
All employees must ensure that, when they attend work or return to work following a break
taken off the premises, the alcohol level in their system does not exceed the Company’s
maximum permitted limit. This applies to all employees of the Company, whatever their role,
and whether or not the employee will be driving a Company vehicle or their own vehicle on
Company business.
