• Fuses in plugs should be of the correct current rating.
• The cord grip should effectively anchor the outer sheath of the flexible cord. The flexible
cord should be in good condition, free from undue kinking and kept as short as practical
to avoid the risk of personnel tripping over trailing cables.
• Defective tools must be taken out of service and clearly identified as faulty, until
repaired by a competent person.
21.10 Compressed Air Installations
• Compressed air receivers and associated pipe work must
have their safe working pressure (SWP) marked on them
and be fitted with a pressure gauge and a valve for draining
any condensation.
• A pressure relief valve should be fitted to the receiver or in
supply lines to prevent the pressure exceeding the SWP.
When practicable reservoirs are to be regularly drained of
any moisture. If compressed air is used to clean work, the
air line should be fitted with a nozzle that reduces outlet
pressure to 2 BAR or less.
• The Managing Director is responsible for ensuring that the receiver is examined by a
qualified and competent person at least once every 26 months. All records of
inspection must be retained by the Managing Director
• Great care must be exercised in the use of compressed air, which can be dangerous if
used improperly. The following safety points apply to its use:
• NEVER point a compressed air gun at another person.
• Never use compressed air for playing practical jokes, e.g. putting it up someone’s
trouser leg etc.
• Ensure any open cuts to the hand are covered when holding any component that is
being blown clean.
• Other injuries have been caused by discharging guns with the nozzle held close to the
skin, and very serious injuries, sometimes fatal, have occurred when the nozzle of the
gun has been pointed towards the anus, even at some distance away.
• Never attempt to dust down yours or other peoples clothing with air guns.
• Never use an air gun to clean away toxic or flammable dust as this could present a
serious hazard.
• Any defects must be reported immediately.
• The Foreman is to isolate the whole system in the event of a malfunction or defect until
the problem has been rectified.
