Bench and Floor Mounted Milling/Drilling Machines
• All machines are to be securely mounted and fixed to
floors or benches.
• Safety guards are to be fitted and maintained in
working order and used where a risk of injury exists.
The machine should be fitted with an emergency stop
switch or other device to bring the machine to rest in
the event of emergency
• All objects/work requiring drilling/milling are to be held
in the jig vice or manipulator which in turn is to be bolted
to the drill table. Work should not be held by hand or
hand tools. Any custom made jig, vice or attachment
must be approved by the Managing Director or
Foreman before being brought into use.
• C.E. marked glasses or goggles Grade 2 are to be
worn when drilling where a risk exists to operators or
others, any swarf should be removed wearing gloves.
• Ensure that no loose clothing or item is worn which might get caught in the machine
e.g. cuffs of overalls, ties, rings, chains, etc.
• Cotton gloves must not be worn when using these machines.
• The power is to be turned off at the main isolator switch prior to changing the machines:
1. Drive belts
2. Drive gears
3. Chucks
• Any machine malfunction is to be immediately reported to the Managing Director and
or Foreman. The machine is then to have an 'Out of Order' board attached in a
prominent position and isolated from its power source.
21.6 Metal Power Saws
• These machines are only to be operated by competent persons who have been trained
on their use and appropriate personal protective equipment is to be worn, e.g. eye
protection and gloves.
• Prior to use, the operator is to ensure that all stop controls are functioning correctly.
• Work must be securely clamped and any long pieces are to be supported. If long
pieces protrude into gangways they are to be clearly marked and not left unattended.
• The operator is to ensure that where applicable coolant is flowing prior to commencing
any cutting.
• The machine is to be electrically isolated before any cleaning or maintenance
procedure is undertaken.
