11.4 What are the effects of Asbestos on the body?
11.5 If you suspect you have been exposed to Asbestos in your working area on site
what do you need to do?
• Stay where you are and make contact with one of your colleagues nearby if possible.
• If nobody is nearby then use your phone and call the office but stay put.
• Ask the site you are working on if there is any Asbestos present. You should already
know this as you should have requested and read the on-site Asbestos file.
• Ask for a change of clothes and a bag to be provided for you and some privacy.
• You need to move to a non-contaminated area and change your clothes, placing your
dirty workwear in the bag. The bag should ideally be double bagged and marked as
contaminated.
• The client should then call a specialist to come out and identify the material, if it is
Asbestos your clothes are to be disposed of, do not take them home as they can
contaminate your house and your family if they contain Asbestos.
• Report the event to the Managing Director Richard Bailey who will ensure that this is
followed up on your behalf.
