13.3 Using Slings, Chains and Lifting Equipment
Note: When using slings, chains and lifting this safe system of work should be
used.
1. All equipment used for lifting comes under the lifting operations and lifting equipment.
Regulations 1998 also know as LOLER and equipment MUST be tested in accordance
with the regulations.
2. The proposed lift MUST be assessed by a competent person before lifting. The correct
sized slings or chains used and where to attach the equipment also identified if it is a
one off lift. A separated method statement must be written out before the lift.
3. All equipment MUST be checked for the safe working load and any damage before
starting the lift.
▪ Slings – check there are not rips, cuts or stitching coming undone on the sling.
Also tag with SWL (Safe Working Load) and the date.
▪ Shackles – check that it is not dislocated and threads not damaged.
▪ Chains – check hooks and catches are not damaged or stretched links. Also
tag with SWL (safe Working Load) and the test date.
▪ Chain Blocks – check hook and chain links are not stretched and damaged.
Also SWL (Safe Working Load).
▪ Lever pull lifts – check hook and chain is not stretched. Also SWL (Safe Working
Load)
4. Do not position yourself under any suspended load.
5. If the load needs to be controlled attach and use a guide rope.
6. Any relevant Risk Assessment or safe system of work should be read and understood
before lifting. An authorised Banks man should control the lift.
7. After completing the lift, checks should be made on the equipment for any new damage.
If there is it needs to be reported to the Manager, if not, return equipment to its correct
location.
If all the above controls are followed then the risk of injury to persons has been brought down
to as low as is reasonably practical.
