✓ Where practicable, the ladder is to extend at least 1.05m above the stepping off point.
✓ Individuals should check ladders before and after use to ensure they are safe and any defects
should be reported immediately to the Foreman or Manager.
✓ Ladders are not to be used when working over 6 metres, although ladders may be used for
climbing up to a maximum of 9 metres, where a resting platform must be provided after the
first and every subsequent 9 metres.
✓ All ladders will be individually marked for identification and a ladder register is to be
maintained by the Contracts / Works Manager. Ladders will undergo a thorough inspection
by a competent person at least once every six months, and the results recorded in the ladder
                    register.

            18.3 Fixed ladders

A fixed ladder means any ladder or steps which are fixed as a permanent means of access, egress
            or as a working platform.

Such ladders must be provided with hoops if it extends beyond 2.5 metres to prevent persons falling
and the maximum spacing of hoops shall not exceed 470mm.

Fixed ladders must be formally inspected annually and a record of inspection kept in the ladder
            register held by the Foreman.

Metal fixed ladders should be regularly painted to prevent rust and corrosion.
Where a fixed ladder provides access to a working platform, suitable edge protection must be
provided to prevent the falls of persons, plant or materials.

The handrail around the working area or along the platform must be of sufficient
height (at least 1.1m in height with an intermediate rail and a kickboard)
Never lean or work outside the handrail without wearing a harness
Never use the handrail as a step to reach inaccessible places.

Guidance concerning the requirements for fixed vertical ladders, stairways, gantries and
catwalks may be found in the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations, 1992 and
                  associated guidance notes.

When using a fixed ladder to climb onto your vehicle you must have three points of
contact at all times to minimise the risk of falling and injury.
