               18.5 Scaffold Tower

The company will hire a Scaffold Tower when required to be used when tasks must be
carried out at height. Only trained and authorised employees can erect and dismantle
the tower, and supervision by an appointed person or a manager should ensure it is used
correctly. You must never climb on the outside of the tower or remove any of the
guardrails while carrying out your duties.
When not in use, the tower should be dismantled and stowed away to prevent any
damage that may be caused by a vehicle or machine.

                     Portable tower scaffolds must:
✓ Be constructed on level firm ground
✓ Not exceed the 4:1 ratio (height: narrowest width)
✓ Provide fall protection during construction
✓ Allow access within the tower (if overturn is likely by attaching a ladder outside)
✓ Be fitted with a handrail and suitable secure flooring to the working area
✓ Be provided with the maximum loading
✓ Be constructed by trained persons
NOTE: The access tower must be used when working at height if there is no means of
access for a mobile telescopic boom or scissor lift. When erecting or dismantling a
               tower this Safe System of Work must be followed;

               Before erecting a tower

               1. Ensure that this Safe System of Work and the instruction guide has been read and
understood by anyone using the equipment.

               2. Always ensure that the necessary components are available and inspected for damage
                   and wear prior to erection.

               3. Ensure the ground surface to be worked on is suitably firm and clear of obstruction.
               4. Only trained and authorised persons can erect or dismantle the tower.

               5. The authorised person needs to calculate the correct height of the platform to ensure the
users do not overstretch when carrying out the work.
               6. Do not erect the tower where there is a risk of contact with unprotected cables, unguarded
                   machinery or harmful substances.

               Whilst erecting a tower
               1. Outdoor freestanding tower must not exceed a platform height of 8.2m, for indoor use the
maximum platform height is 12.2m. To ensure maximum stability is achieved, stabilisers
or outriggers must be fitted at the first available opportunity, usually after the first module
                   is complete.
               2. Always take into account the ground conditions i.e. are they capable of withstanding the
                   loads imposed by the scaffolding.

               3. Ensure the tower is level and vertical.
