Sydney – an early GRP hull but one of the most
beautiful teak decks and wooden coachwork
treatments you have ever seen.
CYAA representation was headed by long-time
Metung stalwart, Terry Grundy. Terry is the
soft-hearted custodian of many an unloved old
Dragon, currently owning 12 of them, the
majority wooden. Terry’s generosity allowed
two other members to participate – he lent Gazelle
to Philip Brown who commandeered David
McKenzie and Jaque Moore (not yet a CYAA
member) to crew with him. In addition, he kindly
lent seven of his yachts to other crews!
Gazelle is a wooden Dragon built in Germany by
Abeking & Rasmussen from Lemwerder-Bremen
in 1963 (boat number 5978). With her fresh coat
of squall blue (light blue) paint, she looked a treat
when we first saw her at the Metung marina on
the Saturday prior to the regatta.
Pre-regatta preparations included sail
measurement and crew weighing – total limit
285kg. The crew of Whimsical realised the day
before that having one crew member well over
100kg would see them over the limit, so Saturday
was a crash diet day for him. With much clothing
removal for the final weigh-in, they scraped in
by 30 grams!
