Since the habitat opened, Amelia has trained more
than 140 volunteers and staff on proper tortoise care.
She has patiently listened to all of our concerns and
cheerfully answered all of our questions, even the
dumb ones! Most of all she made the health of the
tortoises her top priority.
Amelia will start her new job as a BLM Natural Re-
source Specialist in July. Her job won’t include tak-
ing care of animals or volunteers, but she plans to
find ways outside of her job to work with animals.
The torts and volunteers will miss her.

Happy Trails, Amelia.
In May, the Tort Team hosted a farewell party for
Amelia Savage, BLM Wildlife Biologist and Tort
Boss. Amelia is getting married and moving to North
Dakota. She is originally from Florida and will cer-
tainly miss the Las Vegas “winter.”
When the new Visitor Center was completed in
2010, the tortoises got a brand new habitat. Amelia
was responsible for setting the protocols for the habi-
tat (yes, that means the blue booties were her idea),
insuring that the tortoises got proper care and train-
ing everyone who might set foot in the habitat.
