The students, picturing themselves as the characters in the scenes, realize they have
committed the same mistakes or are facing similar problems /issues in their everyday life.
They also learn how to correct these mistakes and tackle these problems / issues.
The Actual Practice:
Film analysis is conducted as a group activity involving critical viewing of short films depicting
various situations in life. The students are divided into small groups; 15 minutes are given to
groups to analyze and coordinate their ideas and make a short crisp presentation. The time frame
creates a healthy stress that leads to intense focused thinking, team-spirit and creativity. The Films
have been purposely shot with no dialogues. This compels the students to learn to observe the
characters and their expressions; the music in the background.
Though the department has produced more than 26 films from the past few years, this year has
been earmarked to produce and focus a few special projects which are theme based like Vriksha
depicting our Indian Culture and Heritage on growing and protecting local species of trees.
A few films are currently being produced on Temple Architecture, ‘Why Conserve Nature’, Places
of Worship and National Integration. The department is also at present involved in a special
project of producing 8 short films on Swami Vivekananda’s Childhood Days for Ramakrishna Mutt
to commemorate the ‘150th Birth Anniversary of Swami Vivekananda’. It has been proposed that
this film will be showcased in all schools across the country.
