example, a new lip gloss will generate lots of buzz within the beauty
industry, even though the marketplace is already saturated with lip
glosses. But the new product found a way to stand out, and if it
offers even just one new, unique purpose it can become the new,
hot product.

    So, as you develop your idea, focus on how it will be different.
Keep asking yourself the question that you will be asked frequently
by your customers: "How is your product different or better than
the others already out there?" We'll look further at this in Step 7.

     Bu rt's Bees (a very popul a r l i n e of personal care products made
     from beeswax) had quite a long trip from humble beginning to
     household name. B u rt Shavitz sold qua rts of honey from the
     back of his pickup truck while living in an 8' x 8' cabin in New
     England. I n 1 984, his friend, Roxanne Qu imby, saw the leftover
     beeswax from Bu rt's ho ney production and decided they should
     make candles and sell them at a local craft fair. The by-product
     of his h oney became the main product for their candles. They
     earned $200 o n their first batch, and by the end of the first year,
     sa les were up to $20,000. They decided to expa nd i nto natu ra l
     soaps a nd lip balm, and that success led to an even l a rger line
     of al l-natural bath and body products. In 1998, they had annual
     sales of $8 m i l l i o n and their B urt's Bees l i n e was sold i n more
     than 4,000 outlets. By 2007, their products were sold in 30,000
     i nte rnational retai l outlets.
