VIBRO REPLACEMENT GROUND IMPROVEMENT TECHNIQUE: -
STONE COLUMN OR COLUMN OF STONE
ABSTRAK

The Vibro Floatation technique utilizing stone columns, has become a
prevalent method for ground improvement in soft soil conditions.
This approach proves economical and effective, especially in
scenarios requiring substantial earth filling, such as bridge
approaches. Stone columns offer a cost-effective alternative to pile
embankments, addressing issues related to bearing failure and long-
term consolidation. Some reported failures also associated to soil
arching failures that caused mushroom effect on the platform
surface level.

In recent years, innovative Vibro Floatation stone column techniques
have been introduced in our country, leading to both successful and,
unfortunately, some unsuccessful cases. This presentation aims to
elucidate the concept of stone column ground improvement
techniques. Types of stone column technique and ground conditions
suitable for each technique will be briefed. Additionally, it will discuss
crucial aspects to prevent failures, drawing insights from failure case
histories.
