French/Spanish
Head of Department:
Mrs M Mason
Summary of Programme
for Year 9:
Students will deepen their
knowledge of their chosen
language(s), practising
comprehension skills with
listening and reading exercises.
Through completing speaking
and writing tasks, grammar is
practised and extended and
vocabulary used in context. We
also work more with translation
both into the foreign language(s)
and into English. As we cover
familiar topics e.g. my family and
my hobbies, different and more
complex structures are introduced.
We use online resources to help
learn vocabulary and to develop
more independent study. When
learning a language, there is
always an element of culture, and
we study a film and get a taster
of music and literature as well
as learning about festivals and
famous people.
Does the Year 9 course include
any elements of the GCSE?
We begin the GCSE course in
Year 9, to ensure that all content
has been covered in preparation
for the GCSE exam at the end of
Year 11. We build upon skills learnt
in Years 7 and 8, and lessons are
structured to support students at
all levels.
