the Association of Zoos and Aquariums are both a zoo and an aquarium—
guests often miss.

Originally, only marine animals that live along the Pacific coast of the Americas
resided in the building. Over the years, new exhibits were added, as well as animals
native to other bodies of water around the world, including the Great Lakes.
Signage in THE LIVING COAST has evolved to reflect our growing sense
of urgency to save our oceans, lakes, rivers, and streams and the unique plants
and animals that live in them.
On the following pages, you’ll be introduced to some of these unique species,
including a critically endangered sea turtle, species of fish that switch gender as
they age, male animals that give birth, and some frisky penguins.
