Yusra Mardini
BRAVE - COMMITTED - ATHLETIC
Yusra Mardini was born on the 5th of March 1998
in Darayya, Damascus, Syria. Yusra Mardini is most well
known for being in the first ever refugee team for a
swimming event in the Rio Olympics.
In 2011 the Syrian war broke out and Yusra's house was
bombed. Yusra and her sister Sara fled the country and
joined a refugee group.
When they were traveling on a boat meant for 6 people
and there was 20 people on it and the motor broke down,
Yusra and her sister jumped out the pushed the boat for 3
hours until they reached the shore.
Yusra joined a refugee swimming team she would train
with them. After a few years, they became the first ever
refugee team in the Olympics swimming event in Rio.
Yusra Mardini is most famous for leading the first ever
refugee team in the women's swimming event at the Rio
Olympics 2016. Yusra Mardini also pushed 20 people on a
boat for 3 hours to get to shore.
